BRIDGET HACKSHAW

From the series ‘Unseen Glass’

The windows that Colin McCahon created for twelve buildings that I have documented over the past several years, had been barely mentioned in the great mass of commentary and scholarship about his art.

Is this because windows do not have the commercial value of a painting, not being easily traded in the marketplace and displayed in art galleries or is it because they are installed in more domestic places; private houses and churches and are not viewed as serious art, maybe as mere craft?

Yet we know from McCahon’s letters how very important this work was to him, providing a meaningful context and structure within which to express his ideas on faith and our place.

Researching and taking photographs of his windows and of the windows that inspired him, has led me to begin to explore and celebrate the overlooked and undervalued art and architecture in domestic and local settings.
